The condition of the basements of multi apartment residential buildings in the Poti IDP settlement has remained a problem for years. Contaminated and water-filled basements not only hinder the infrastructural sustainability of the buildings but also pose a threat to the residents’ safe living environment.
This week, we are actively working with local youth on cleaning activities aimed at:
- Pumping out water from the basements and cleaning the space;
- Reducing health risks and increasing the safety of the living environment;
- Strengthening the responsibility of the population and youth;
- Preparing the space for further infrastructural works.
Accordingly, this week we have already pumped out the stagnant water, cleaned the basements of accumulated waste, identified problem areas and prepared the space for the next rehabilitation phase.
Young people living in the settlement and members of homeowners' associations actively and voluntarily participated in the process. As a result, the basements have been prepared for infrastructural improvements, the restoration of the water and sewage system, the arrangement of drainage systems and the creation of climate-resilient infrastructure.
It is noteworthy that the activity facilitated and strengthened the involvement of the population and the promotion of activities initiated within the framework of shared responsibility.
The project is implemented by the Charity Humanitarian Center "Abkhazeti" (CHCA) with the support of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Government of Denmark.
